The Théâtre de la Bastille, in the lively Rue de la Roquette, was originally a factory, later transformed into a small variety theater .
In 1912, it became a cinema, before becoming a theater again in 1974. After several name changes, it took on its present name in 1982, under the direction of Jean-Claude Fall. In the early 2000s, under the direction of Jean-Marie Hordé, the theater is considered one of the capital's most innovative theaters, being one of the first places to take an interest in contemporary dance performance. It only went public last year, when Claire Dupont was appointed director.
Since 2023, an Artistic Parliament has been in place, comprising four artists until 2027: Gurshad Shaheman, Betty Tchomanga, Agnés Mateus and Quim Tarrida. Each of the four is invited to develop a creation for the season, linked to the world around us.
The theater has two auditoriums, with 261 and 155 seats respectively. The theater's aim is to offer shows for a long time so that they can be really exploited, moving from unknown to potential success. There's a real desire to support the entire life cycle of a show.
