Pauvre Bitos - Le diner de têtes, a classic by Jean Anouilh, is back in Paris at the Théâtre Hébertot in the 17th arrondissement. The play, which caused such a stir when it came out in 1956, runs until April 28, 2024 .
Jean Anouilh, the famous 20th-century playwright and screenwriter, wrote PauvreBitos in 1956, which was first performed at the Théâtre de Montparnasse. In the play, a group of friends decide to organize a themed dinner party: everyone will come dressed as one of the characters of the French Revolution. André Bitos, a son of the people turned magistrate, represents Robespierre, played at the time by the famous Michel Bouquet. But the evening isn't just an evening with friends. By placing La Terreur and La Libération in parallel, at the dawn of the Algerian War, the play reveals itself to be a manifesto against abusive forms of power, and we discover what "Bitos" really thinks of the Orde Publique.
Jean Anouilh was accused of writing a pamphlet on the Resistance, only a few years after the end of the Second World War. In the end, the play was a success with the public, with 308 performances, and was received as an electroshock. In 1973, Jean Anouilh even said, "In my theater, there's only one play where I've really enjoyed myself, and that's a play that caused a scandal at the time: Pauvre Bitos. That made me very happy!
The play Pauvre Bitos - Le diner de têtes, now directed by Thierry Harcourt, has not been staged again since 1967.
