Let’s go the American way! Let’s enjoy giant inflatable French fries by Claes Oldenburg, linger over Marilyn Monroe’s full lips by Andy Warhol, get your mind blown away by Edward Ruscha’s movies… Industrial, too capitalist, disposable, the world sent up by Pop Art is ultra-joyful and colorful.
32 artists are brought together within the Musée Maillol for an exhibition called Icons that matter gathering many legendary works from the American Pop Art movement. Some of these works have even never been displayed in France and will exceptionally be lent by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
The exhibition returns on the world of art as well as the world of fashion and advertising displaying an era (the 60s) where boundaries between the subjects are falling apart. As disturbing as funny, Pop Art shows the harsh reviews about America’s modern and administrative drifts of its outrageousness and its comics language…
To Roy Lichtenstein’s mind: “Pop Art looks out into the world, it appears to accept its environment, which is not good or bad, but different – another state of mind”.
