L'art du pastel, de Degas à Renon is the must-see exhibition at the Petit Palais from September 15 to April 8, 2018.
The exhibition showcases the masterpieces of the Petit Palais pastel collection, with works by Berthe Morisot, Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Émile-René Ménard and a particularly remarkable group of works by Odilon Redon and James Tissot.
Most of these highly fragile works are presented in an unprecedented way: they will be shown exceptionally for 6 months before returning to storage. This event will introduce visitors to the issue of conserving works on paper, which are particularly sensitive to the effects of light and therefore cannot be exhibited permanently.
Today, the pastel technique is infinitely seductive for its material and colors, at the crossroads between drawing and painting. The vast majority of the pieces on display, dating from between 1850 and 1914, illustrate the revival of pastel painting in the second half of the 19th century.
