After the iconic Dalida we saw from every angle during the beautiful exhibition at Paris Musée Galliera and explored by Lisa Azuelos in an ambitious biographical movie, this is now time to pay tribute to Barbara. On the big screen, French filmmaker Mathieu Amalric will be in charge of picturing her with an attentive subtlety and endearment. In the meantime, the Philharmonie presents a wide exhibition that is outstanding from every point of view.
The exhibition starts with Barbara’s childhood whose real name was Monique Serf. Raised in a Jewish family, the devastated young girl rushes to Brussels where she makes her stage debut before returning to Paris and its cabarets. Midnight singer, Barbara imposes on the world her style, her gall and her desire for freedom. She hungers for everything, acts in plays and in movies and even creates a musical…
Carried by her success, she rubs shoulder with the greatest names of the day and has her picture taken by Robert Doisneau, Jean-Pierre Leloir and Just Jaeckin. Sensual, royal, dark, Barbara is a thousand women at the same time. The exhibition pays tribute to her beauty made of huge black eyes and crow-like costumes thanks to several and sometimes rare pictures. We also are given the opportunity to look at drawings, handwritten letters and many documents.
Thanks to a theatrical and creative staging, the exhibition is both a musical and visual experience ending in a green setting after discovering the moment when the curtain opens and Barbara’s lace dresses.
