Held from February 8 to July 8, 2018, the “Corot, the painter and his models” exhibition displayed by Musée Marmottan Monet is said to be touching. If we know Corot as one of the founding fathers of impressionism, with great landscape paintings of Ville d’Avray in 2018, we will return on the artist’s private part of his life thanks to the hanging of about 60 portrait paintings, paintings often kept secret by Corot throughout his life.
The exhibition offers to discover the portraits of his close acquaintances, and first of all, the making of his paintings in his atelier where the most famous models of this era – 1820-1840 – pose for him. In 1829, Alexandre Clérambault, his friend, says about it “Corot wants to do improve portraits. At the beginning, he made it a joke; but by working, he became moved and actively worked which was laughable.”
Using Ingres as his model, Corot will persist to work on faces allowing him to better master the anatomy of the human body, the attitudes, the face expression, this noble art that can rock the painter’s career.
Family portraits, studies from Italy, variations on themes such as the Italian woman or the Greek Girl, the woman reading or the woman and the fountain, from the monk to the man wearing an armor, without forgetting the spectacular nudes, the Musée Marmottan Monet touches us.
We love the “Femme à la perle”, an oil on canvas that remained hung in Corot’s living room from 1840, a panting he tried very hard to rectify at ant occasion, finishing in 1868 only. This painting immediately reminds of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Joconde, while the title mysteriously references to Johannes Vermeer’s most famous paintings, to visit asap!
