Discovering the origins of abstract art... In partnership with the Centre Pompidou, Prague's Národní Galerie and Helsinki'sAteneum Art Museum, the Grand Palais presents an exhibition on the life and work of painter František Kupka, entitled Kupka, pioneer of abstraction, from March 21 to July 30, 2018.
A retrospective focusing on the life of the Czech artist, his work, and the painter's approach to two major currents of the 19th and 20th centuries, which shaped his own career: symbolism and abstraction. A total of 300 works are exhibited along a half-chronological, half-thematic route: paintings, diaries, manuscripts, engravings, photographs, films, drawings... all of which make up the exhibition's five sections.
Five zones enabling the public " to enter in an attractive way into the specific universe of the creator ": "Seeking his way", "A new beginning", "Inventions and classifications", "Reminiscences and syntheses" and "Ultimate renewals". The exhibition also focuses on " the key moments of his creative period, the Symbolist masterpieces and the first Parisian Expressionist portraits ", as well as on the artist's transition to abstract art from 1912, and his so-called "machinist" period in the late 20s.
The retrospective also highlights Kupka's taste for philosophy, religion, science, poetry and ancient and oriental cultures. After Paris, the exhibition makes a stop at the National Gallery in Prague from September 2018 to January 2019, then at the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki from February to May 2019.
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
