August Sander did an incredible work, that is still looked by many artists throughout the world. In black and white, he photographed all kinds of people belonging to varied trades, in frontal position, without any fuss. These “Men of the 20th century”, as he used to call them belong to all the layers of society.
This series is so powerful that it inspired August Sander’s son, Erich (1903-1944). Very politically committed, the latter has been incarcerated in 1934 in Cologne; he made the best of being locked up to photograph the prisoners and add an unknown part of history to his father’s work. At the same time, August was realizing portraits on order for members of the National Socialist Party in Germany and Jews in Cologne.
This is how, August Sander decided to add to his Men of the 20th century portfolio the series “Political Prisoners” by his son and his own series of portraits of Jews from Cologne under the name “Persecuted”, as well as the one of the National Socialists.
Paris Mémorial de la Shoah gives pride of place to this work through a wonderful exhibition that all photography and History lovers should visit.
