Van Gogh, Mondrian, Scheffer, Dutch artists in Paris at Petit Palais

With its exhibition “Dutch artists in Paris”, running from February 6 to May 13, 2018, Paris Petit Palais returns on a beautiful era, from 1789 to 1914, that would have seen over 1,000 Dutch artists in Paris, attracted by the dynamism of the artistic life of the City of Lights and by the style of its star artists.

All in all, 115 works conserved in museum from The Netherlands, as well as other European museums that will show the influence of French artists on the Dutch painters who came to France to enjoy career opportunities, an emerging art market and visit many museums with large collections.

These stays of Dutch artists, more or less long, sometimes end by definitely staying in France, then, by teaching their French comrades things such as themes, colors from the tradition of the Dutch Golden Age that the French public rediscovers in this period of time.

For this exhibition, Petit Palais focuses on 9 Dutch artists:

Gérard van Spaendonck, the first painter to come in late 18^th century, friend of Jacque-Louis Davis
Ary Scheffer who becomes one of the hottest artists at Louis-Philippe’s Court
Jacob Maris, Johan Jongkind and Frederik Kaemmerer, frequenting Boudin or Monet during the Worl’s Fairs
George Breitner, Kees van Dongen come to meet
Vincent Van Gogh, who frequents Emile Bernard, Toulouse-Lautrec, Camille Pissaro, Signac
Piet Mondrian for the late 19^th century

These artists will have an influence on Dutch painting such as Maris or Breitner who will convey new ideas when they return to the Netherlands. It’s the first time that such a big exhibition is devoted to rich artistic, aesthetic and friendly exchanges between Dutch painters and French painters in Paris, from the late 18^th century to the early 20^th century.
