Renoir Père et Fils. Painting and Cinema, the Musée d'Orsay 's new exhibition , explores the relationship between father and son, but also between artists, from November 6, 2018 to January 28, 2019!
Theexhibition aims to explore the fertile and sometimes paradoxical dialogue between a father, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and a son, Jean Renoir, between two artists, between painting and cinema. When Jean was born in 1894, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, then aged 53, became recognized as a master of French art. For Jean, his childhood was spent in art, as he often served as a model for his father.
Jean Renoir was 25 when his father died in 1919. From the time he was 15 until he was 25, Jean practiced ceramics, selling pieces in fauvist colors whose craftsmanship was symbolic of the teaching of his father, a porcelain painter in his early years and an ardent defender of the decorative arts.
Although the young man could have devoted himself to ceramics all his life, he fell in love with the cinema when he married Andrée Heuschling, " an unusual beauty ". Jean wanted to make her a movie star, and had a film made in her honor by Albert Dieudonné. It was 1924 when Jean Renoir shot his first film, Catherine, and discovered his calling: cinema. The film was not a great success, but Jean had " the director's demon ".
Despite these failures, Jean Renoir pursued his career with La Chienne, Boudu and La Règle du jeu. With La Grande Illusion in 1937, he achieved international fame and moved to Los Angeles. Le Déjeuner sur l' herbe (1959) was shot at his parents' house in Cagnes, in the South of France. In his film Partie de campagne, he not only depicts the women in his life, but also the places where he grew up.
Jean would make these nods to his parents throughout his career, going so far as to spend almost twenty years preparing his father's biography, a tribute published in 1962 and still widely read today.
Through paintings, film extracts, photographs, costumes, posters, drawings and documents, some of which have never been shown before, this multi-disciplinary exhibition explores the themes common to both artists, father and son...
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
