Caravaggio in Rome at the Jacquemart-André Museum, photos

Born in Milan in 1571, Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, revolutionized 17th-century Italian painting with his innovative use of chiaroscuro. At the age of 13, the young Michelangelo Merisi was hired in the studio of Simone Peterzano, a famous painter from Milan, and at 21, he left his native city for Rome. He enjoyed a successful career in Rome, but was often convicted of brawling and fled the city in 1606 after murdering a man at the age of 37.

During his 16 years in Rome, Caravaggio produced numerous masterpieces and developed a revolutionary pictorial style, characterized by unprecedented realism and humanity.

For the first time, 10 of Caravaggio's masterpieceswill be brought together in the rooms of the Musée Jacquemart-André, including the two versions of the Penitent Magdalene, painted during Caravaggio's flight, both of which will be on view at the Musée Jacquemart-André.

The Musée Jacquemart-André is also benefiting from the loan of Judith Beheading Holofernes (1508), The Lute Player (1595-1596), The Young Saint John the Baptist with the Ram (1602), Saint Francis in Meditation (circa 1606), Saint Jerome (1605-1606), Ecce Homo, The Supper at Emmaus (1605-1606), Saint Francis, Madeleine in Ecstasy known as "Madeleine Klain", Madeleine (1606). The exhibition will focus on Caravaggio's relationships with collectors and artists, as well as with the poets and scholars of his time - relationships that have never before been the subject of an exhibition!
