Set in southern Japan, the city of Nara is known worldwide for its hundreds of deers, hinds and stags roaming its streets and parks. Everybody can come and touch them, give them some food and take pictures of them… It’s very mind-blowing (and incredibly cute).
But Nara is also known for its temples listed as World Heritage since 1998. Because it has been Japan’s capital between 710 and 784, the city houses some of the oldest Japanese Buddhist temples. The latter are house of priceless works of art including superb medieval sculptures…
Coming this winter to Paris! The occasion is absolutely exceptional: the Musée national des arts asiatiques – Guimet welcomes for two months two guardian sculptures lent for the first time outside Japan and a wooden statue of Bodhisattva Kshitigarbha. The first two are brawny, severe and threatening while the third is serene, radiant.
Two views of Japanese medieval sculpture, a total bargain for Japanese art lovers. A sophisticated pleasure you don’t want to miss!
