Jean-Baptiste Huynh (born in 1966) has had the same camera for the past thirty years. And the same protocol: he always put some distance between the subject and the camera and only has one source of light. His entire studio can fit in a small piece of luggage… This is why he travels the world easily, meeting unknown faces whose beauty touch him at the bend of a market or a railway station.
Famous for his portraits as well as for his still lives (plants, art objects, mirrors…), Jean-Baptiste Huynh quickly made a name for himself in the world of photography thanks to his peculiar and precise practice, with a strong appetite for black and white. Today, he’s given pride of place at the Musée national des arts asiatiques – Guimet that offered him to immortalize a few pieces of the collections, as well as to display his entire work through three series of photographs, especially made in Vietnam, India, Japan, China and Cambodia.
For he has sobriety as a mentor, the staging is like his photo work: minimalist, elegant, immersive. In front of his very large formats (some measure 120cmw120cm others 180cmx180cm!), the contemplation turns into meditation. And offers us a very beautiful manner to start the year, but softly obviously.
