Soldiers have always wanted to look elegant. From October 19, 2019 to January 26, 2020, Paris Musée de l’Armée invites us to discover about 200 pieces of fashion from the military world thanks to the “Les Canons de l’Elégance” [The Canons of Elegance] exhibition. And during coronavirus confinement, the exhibition is digitally opening again.

From October 19, 2019 to January 26, 2020, at the Musée de l’Armée, you can discover thanks to the Les Canons de l’Elégance exhibition about 200 pieces of uniforms and weaponry from the 19th century to nowadays: jewels, fashion accessories, haute couture pieces designed for soldiers. An exhibition you can enjoy digitally on the museum's website to keep yourself busy during confinement.

The military world is not a universe we expect to find in fashion and yet… The warlike zeal is often linked to the access to power, commanding the duty of distinction and the taste for prestige through clothes inspiring respect. Also, soldiers have had – in all times – a strong taste for weapons, gear pieces and beautiful, rich and quality accessories.

Gunsmithery, fire weaponry, silversmithery, embroidery, saddlery… you’ll be blown away.

Passing by several historic, anthropologic and aesthetic approached, the exhibition highlights the way auspicious warriors contribute to the radiance and the legitimacy of the political power, how they rewarded merit and how they answered to the desire of assimilation or distinction within a group.
