This is an exhibition not to be missed, especially if you're a fan of manga culture! Galerie Perrotin is once again devoting an exhibition to Japanese artist Mr . (real name Masakatsu Iwamoto), from January 20 to March 2, 2024. This retrospective offers a fascinating journey into the heart of Mr.'s neo-pop universe, a world where childlike innocence mingles with brutal reality.
Highlighting Mr.'s eclectic oeuvre, theexhibition offers a unique exploration of his neo-pop aesthetic. Recognized as a member of the Superflat movement, Mr. uses manga andanime as his preferred mediums for expressing his innermost fantasies and thoughts. His works, which oscillate between the softness of the Kawaii style and darker themes, reveal often little-known aspects of contemporary Japanese culture. Galerie Perrotin thus becomes the stage for a unique artistic encounter!
In addition to his paintings and sculptures, theexhibition focuses on immersive installations and videos, where a striking contrast emerges between the apparent lightness of the characters and the gravity of the contexts evoked. Mr. does not hesitate to draw on historical events such as Japan's defeat in the Second World War or the Fukushima tragedy to enrich his creations, using them as backdrops for his works. These references, far from being trivial, invite deeper reflection on historical scars and contemporary issues. An exhibition that also echoes his success at the Musée Guimet in 2019, where, in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, Mr. had already won over Parisian audiences.
It's a wonderful invitation to plunge into a universe where the imaginary meets reality, where past and present interact. So, shall we drop in for a visit, folks?
