In France, during the Occupation, between 1940 and 1944, the art market was booming. Studios, galleries, auction houses, they all stock up in Paris where over 2 million objects passed between 1941 and 1942.
The reason of this “art euphory”? Starting in the summer 1941, all over France, French civil services seize real estate and works of art belonging to Jews in France, while arrested Jews see their good confiscated too when they arrive at the French internment camp.
For the first time, an exhibition draws a historical and artistical panorama up by questioning the dark secrets of the French art market. This exhibition is called “Le Marché de l’Art sous l’Occupation” to discover at Paris Shoah Memorial from March 20 to November 3, 2019.
The exhibition returns on the chaos of this historic period through historic documents and works of art dispossessed then given back to their owner (not without going through the “legal fight” case) such as paintings by John Constable, Thomas Couture and even George Romney.
Searchers will even explain their methods and help families wishing to get information about the disappearance of objects during the Occupation.
A unique exhibition you don’t want to miss!
