When artists try to escape the definitions of art... This is one of the ideas that the Palais de Tokyo is trying to convey through the exhibition Futur, Ancien, Fugitif, which runs from October 16, 2019 to January 5, 2020. A retrospective featuring a plethora of artists from the French scene, from different backgrounds and generations, but who all share one thing in common: they are revealingcontemporary art in France!
In all, 44 artists take over the entire museum space to tell us their story, through their works, and attempt to answer various questions posed within this exhibition: Who are these contemporaries? What do they have to say about today and tomorrow? What are"the genealogies that contaminate and nourish their thoughts and practices"? A French art scene that ultimately has no obvious common denominator, since all these artists escape definitions, genres and categories as much as they can.
It's a"territory without borders" that the Palais de Tokyo has set out to study, in order to give an account of this"rich, fragmented landscape". And an exhibition that borrows its title fromOlivier Cadiot's 1993 novel, which describes itself as"a statement of what, in the very fragility of the moment, owes as much to the ceaselessly renewed aspirations of a world to come as to the still-vibrant agitations of the past". Shall we drop by the Palais de Tokyo, folks?
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
