Discover the Lady of the Unicorn hanging and the art surrounding it through the prism of antique boxes... This is what the Musée de Cluny is offering with an exhibition entitled Mystérieux coffrets: Estampes au temps de la Dame à la Licorne, from September 18, 2019 to January 6, 2020. A retrospective that takes art and history buffs on the trail of Jean d'Ypres, the painter who produced"the preparatory drawings for the famous hanging and after whom numerous prints, some of which adorn strange coffrets, were engraved", as the museum points out.
In all, almost a quarter of the 140 caskets in existence worldwide are on display for all to see. The exhibition features prints engraved by the painter, glued inside the boxes. The boxes are made of beechwood, covered in leather, barded in iron and each fitted with a secret lock mechanism. These prints, colored with stencils, sometimes form thematic series around religion.
A mysterious object, which must have played a role in devotion in Paris and France around 1500, and which visitors are invited to discover to unravel its secrets. In addition to the boxes, prints, tapestries, stained-glass windows, printed books and other documents are also on display to help visitors understand the context of the period. The idea, too? To offer food for thought on the possible uses of such an object. An opportunity to delve into French history at a pivotal time in art... Shall we go, folks?
