To mark its reopening after the coronavirus crisis, the Musée d'Orsay is staging a brand-new exhibition focusing on James Tissot. Originally scheduled to open on March 24, from June 23 to September 13, 2020, the exhibition plunges us into the daily life of 19th-century high society. Discover details of the life of an artist with a strong attachment to French and English society!

The name James Tissot doesn't ring a bell? No problem! For its reopening, the Musée d'Orsay invites you to discover this French painter who left his mark on his time with his many works. In theexhibition dedicated to him, from June 23 to September 13, 2020, you'll find the paintings that made the artist famous, and his works that await a new spotlight.

The James Tissot retrospective features a wide variety of works, from portraits to the narrative paintings so dear to the English. The influence ofJapanese art can also be seen in his work. His various cycles reflect his interests and delineate the periods of his life: his last works illustrate the Bible and the life of Jesus Christ. These images have left their mark on audiences and artists from the 19th century to the present day.

James Tissot was the artist à la mode from 1850 to 1902. The importance of his art is reflected in the Musée d'Orsayexhibition: portraits ofaristocrats of the period stand side by side with scenes of Victorian life and images of " Parisiennes ". His talent was recognized, and his eye for detail prompted critic John Ruskin to describe his paintings as "colored photographs".

Tissot's paintings were thus windows onto French and English society. Enthusiasts appreciate both the historical aspect of the exhibition and the demonstration of the artistic techniques in vogue at the time. However, James Tissot also knew how to take risks with his art. The painter tried his hand at engraving andgoldsmithing. A master of modern painting (for his time), he also wanted to learnprintmaking andwatercolor.

James Tissot transports us to a bygone era, shimmering with color and grace. We'd love to follow these women into their paintings, to enter these paintings filled with celebration and sweet moments of life. We fell in love with"Une femme à Paris". What's your favorite?
