New Caledonia is home to an indigenous people known as the Kanak. This people with a rich and ancient history has counted among its ranks a number of artists of great creativity and exceptional talent, as evidenced by the many works of art preserved in museums around the world.
These works have been studied and catalogued by Roger Boulay, who worked for theAgence du Développement de la Culture kanake between 1979 and 1998. His mission: to draw up an Inventory of Dispersed Kanak Heritage (IPKD). The museologist and specialist in the Kanak world set to work, exploring the collections of museums and public collections around the world. In his research notebooks, the expert immortalized over 3,000 sketches and fine watercolors of inventoried objects!
This research work is highlighted at the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, through the exhibition Carnets Kanak: Voyage en inventaire by Roger Boulay. From October 4, 2022 to March 12, 2023, Kanak art is on show at the museum.
Visitors can admire Roger Boulay's notebooks, as well as Kanak works from the Musée du Quai Branly collections. Drawings and objets d'art meet and enrich each other, in a tour that highlights the hard work of inventorying. Visitors discover the challenges, difficulties and players involved in this work of memory, which ensures that we never forget the culture and history of these unique peoples.
The Carnets kanak exhibition was due to open in November 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic. The wait is now over, so don't miss out on this wonderful exhibition!
