The capital boasts a number of historical museums, each of which in its own way tells the story of the great moments and milestones that have shaped today's society. In the 12th arrondissement, a special museum awaits you. Discover the Musée de l'Histoire de l'Immigration, located in the Palais de la Porte Dorée. This cultural center blends art, history and a scientific approach, with the aim of "gathering, safeguarding, highlighting and making accessible to as many people as possible the history of immigration, in order to publicize and recognize its role in the France of yesterday and today. "
Through its permanent collections, exhibitions and festive and cultural events, the Musée National de l'Histoire de l'Immigration reveals the past, to help us better understand the present.
The tour highlights eleven key dates in the history of immigration, from 1685 to the present day. There will also be a focus on contemporary issues and questions. Children will also enjoy their own dedicated tour, for a more educational approach. The museum is also being modernized with new digital tools.
To enhance the new tour, works bycontemporary artists have been installed in the museum's collections. These include works by Kader Attia, Mohamed Bourouïssa, Gaëlle Choisne, Claire Fontaine, Kimsoja, Samuel Fosso, Zineb Sedira, Shen Yuan...
An Art Deco architectural masterpiece, the Palais de la Porte Dorée was built for the 1931Colonial Exhibition. Since 2007, it has housed the Musée National de l'Histoire de l'Immigration. Photographs, installations, paintings, sculptures, testimonials, personal objects, videos... The museum's collections tell the many stories of immigration to France.
This scientific and didactic museum explains the major stages of immigration to France, taking a roundabout approach to the country's history. Colonialism and slavery, wars, reconstruction policies, economic and social conflicts, crises, struggles for rights or solidarity, encounters between cultures... In fact, immigration covers a wide range of themes.
Through nearly 600 works, documents, art and historical objects, video and sound extracts, the Musée de l'Histoire de l'Immigration examines the reasons for and consequences of these population movements - whether chosen or not. A number of portraits are also featured on the tour, reminding us that behind the numbers lie people, struggles, hopes and personal stories. And don't miss the music studio, which explores all the musical diversity of France, enriched by the different cultures that make it up.
The Musée de l'Histoire de l'Immigration is open every day except Monday, and is closed on January 1, May 1 and December 25. We strongly recommend that you buy your ticket online and in advance, as the museum attracts many visitors.
All areas of the museum are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Benches are also provided at regular intervals along the tour route, so that you can take a rest. In addition, LSF and sensory tours are available for the deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind and visually impaired.
