An exhibition on the suburbs, their history and their diversity... From April 9 to August 17, 2025, the Palais de la Porte Dorée is hosting the exhibition Banlieues Chéries, a journey through the history of French suburbs and working-class neighborhoods. Theexhibition explores the many imaginary aspects of these areas, between the ordinary and the extraordinary, with the aim of shedding light on their past, contemporary realities and future challenges.
Theexhibition covers a period from the end of the XIXᵉ century to the present day, evoking a variety of themes such as the red suburbs, the suburban crisis and the emergence of large-scale housing estates. This retrospective offers a plurality of viewpoints, combining works of art, historical documents and eyewitness accounts to trace the intimate, political and global history of these spaces. As the museum states in a press release, the " imaginary world of the suburbs, heterogeneous in time and space, rich and bittersweet ", is highlighted.
Drawing on a scientific and polyphonic approach, theexhibition aims to go beyond stereotypes by addressing both the tensions and fractures, but also the pride and creativity of these places. These "beloved suburbs" are places of memory and transmission," reinforcing the importance of revaluing these often marginalized territories. Cultural programming and off-site projects complete this initiative... Shall we drop by the Palais de la Porte Dorée?
