Twenty years of travels, encounters and documentaries: Franck Desplanques unveils his images taken all over the world, in a new, free photo exhibition, presented at Quai de la Photo from January 10 to February 28, 2025. The editor-in-chief of the TV program Rendez-vous en terre inconnue went to meet indigenous communities, immortalizing their way of life, their knowledge, their daily lives.
The Hommage exhibition brings together some one hundred photographs that straddle the line between art and documentary reporting. Greenland, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Nepal, Colombia: on every continent, Franck Desplanques was able to immerse himself in these communities close to nature, which have preserved their traditions and a way of life detached from today's large-scale societies.
Wishing to break away from clichés and show a more authentic vision of these communities, the French photographer followed these peoples in their daily lives, capturing stronger emotions, unexpected moments and unique cultural practices.
Six communities are featured in this exhibition, highlighting the richness and diversity of cultures on Earth, and the need to protect and preserve these differences, which are struggling to survive in a world that has forgotten them.
Franck Desplanques took black-and-white photographs, as well as color-retouched shots. Playing with contrasts and infrared light, the artist wanted to recreate the way Mentawai shamans see the forest and nature. It's a way of putting ourselves in the shoes of these natives, to better understand their vision of the world.
Some of the photos are accompanied by testimonials from the people photographed, to give greater depth and authenticity to the experience. Come and discover them in this free exhibition.
