The history of a medieval sultanate in the spotlight... The Musée du Louvre is hosting theexhibition"Mamlouks, 1250-1517", devoted to the Mamlouk sultanate, an Egyptian-Syrian empire that left its mark on the history of the Islamic Near East, from April 30 to July 28, 2025. Featuring 260 works from international collections, this exhibition explores the cultural and historical wealth of an empire that was, for several centuries, a nerve center for trade between Europe, Africa and Asia.
The origins of the Mamluk sultanate lie in a unique system of military slaves, trained in warrior and religious disciplines, who rose through the hierarchy to control the state. This dynasty distinguished itself by its military exploits, notably against the Crusaders and the Mongols, while developing a cosmopolitan society where diverse populations cohabited, including Christian and Jewish minorities. " A world where sultans, emirs and wealthy civil elites actively engaged in patronage intersected," stresses the Louvre in a press release.
Divided into five sections, theexhibition explores various aspects of this society: its identity, diversity, artistic and scientific achievements, and international connections. An immersive scenography, designed by theBCG agency, invites visitors to discover exceptional works such as manuscripts, textiles, ceramics and enamelled glassware. Through these objects, theexhibition offers a unique opportunity to better understand the artistic and historical heritage of the Mamlouks, often overlooked in Europe.
