Watching the sunrise or sunset is something we rarely do in our daily lives: on vacation, often; the rest of the time, we're usually on the move, at work... What if we celebrated each sunrise and each sunset? At least, that's the idea of artist Joanne Leighton, who for several years has been inviting local residents to take part in the task, from a particular vantage point.
With this performance, certified as a Cultural Olympiad by Paris 2024, the artist proposes a choreographic and unifying work, since this collective of watchmen enables local residents to create links between themselves. So, every morning and evening, the "on-call" volunteer has to watch the sunrise or sunset from a high point for an hour.
First staged in the Parc Jean Moulin-les Guilands (from October 2021 to October 2022), then at theAtelier de Paris (from September 8, 2023 to September 8, 2024), in the 12th arrondissement, the performance is now being offered in the Parc des Docks, in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, from December 2024.
Called the Cycle des Veilleurs, it offers those who wish to take part in these sunrise or sunset vigils the chance to register on a dedicated volunteer schedule. To take part in this great artistic performance, all you have to do is register on the Cycle des Veilleurs website: for the moment, all slots are taken until March 14, with a second registration session on February 24. And don't forget: to round off this great performance, a closing party will be held in December 2025, with all the Vigilers (no fewer than 730) invited!
