An unprecedented dive into the world of the sea... The Musée national de la Marine in Paris presents theexhibition"Jean Gaumy et la mer" (Jean Gaumy and the Sea), a never-before-seen photographic retrospective devoted to the work of Jean Gaumy, a renowned figure in contemporary photography and member of the Magnum Photos agency, from May 14, 2025 to August 17, 2025. The exhibition will feature over 140 photographs from the Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie, exploring the many facets of the maritime world.
In this exhibition, visitors will discover a range of sea-related themes, from deep-sea fishing and oil spills to the daily lives of submariners and polar landscapes. These photographs, taken between Normandy, Greenland,Andalusia and Long Island, illustrate Jean Gaumy's unique style, oscillating between documentary, poetic contemplation and abstraction. Particular attention is paid to emblematic shots and more confidential works, presented here for the first time in a museum.
