The great French couturier Paul Poiret had the innovative idea of doingaway with corsets for women, freeing them from a stifling straitjacket. From June 25, 2025 to January 11, 2026, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is devoting an exhibition to him, the first entirely dedicated to this figure of Parisian haute couture. A plunge into the first decades of the 20th century, when dresses became paintings.
Renowned for liberating women by introducing flowing silhouettes, low under-bust waists and vibrant colors into his designs, Paul Poiret, who became a couturier in 1903, appears as an audacious genius with a flamboyant universe, transforming fashion into an art of living. Throughout the exhibition, visitors can explore all the fields in which he made his mark, from decorative arts to perfumery, gastronomy and, of course, fashion.
A selection of works, documents and testimonials from the museum's collections will shed light on his influence on contemporary designers, and immerse visitors in his creative world, from his fascination with the Ballets Russes to his artistic collaboration with Raoul Dufy and the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes.
