Attention all lovers of Sebastião Salgado's sublime black-and-white photographs. The world-famous Brazilian-born photographer once again takes over Galerie Polka in Paris to unveil his new"Genesis Platinum" exhibition.
Do we really need to introduce Sebastião Salgado? A great name in photojournalism, Sebastião Salgado is at once a profoundly humanist photographer, an artist committed to environmental protection and a skilled traveler, always on the lookout for new images to raise awareness.
Born in 1944 in Aimorés, Brazil, Sebastião Salgado began his career far from the world of photography. After studying economics, he joined the International Coffee Organization (ICO). Sebastião Salgado traveled extensively on assignment. It was at this point that he began to photograph what he saw on his travels. 1973 marked a turning point in his life, when he decided to leave his job to devote himself to his passion for photography. He worked with the Sygma, Gamma and Magnum Photos agencies until 1994, taking some memorable pictures of manual labor and human migration.
Proof of his renown, Sebastião Salgado has received several prestigious awards for his reporting, including the W. Eugene Smith Prize for Humanist Photography in 1982, the World Press Photo in 1985 and the Visa d'or at Visa pour l'Image in 1990.
His greatest work is undoubtedly"Genesis". Composed of different series of photographs, this work questions our relationship with the earth and its resources. Captured between 2004 and 2012, and always shot in black and white, these images feature landscapes, flora and fauna, but also human communities still living according to their ancestral traditions and cultures.
From January 23 to March 15, 2025, Galerie Polka in Paris presents Sebastião Salgado's new exhibition,"Genesis Platinum". It's an opportunity to (re)discover a selection of shots from " Genesis ", printed with platinum-palladium. This unique process, invented in 1873 by Englishman William Willis, gives the print"unequalled stability", says Galerie Polka.
This is not the first time that Sebastião Salgado has taken over this famous Parisian gallery dedicated to the art of photography. The Brazilian artist has exhibited here eight times before. His last exhibition at Galerie Polka dates back to 2023. That year, the photographer presented the installation"Magnum Opus".
In 2025, Galerie Polka is once again inviting Sebastião Salgado to take over its walls, for the"Genesis Platinum" exhibition. Free to view from January 23 to March 15, 2025.
