He used to design “colorful, young, lively and bold fashion”: Yves Saint Laurent is given pride of place from January 29 to May 15, 2022, at Paris Museum of Modern Art. The institution takes part in the huge exhibition curated in six museums in Paris: “Yves Saint Laurent in museums”.

Are you fond of fashion and haute-couture? Are you fascinated by major French designers’ work? This is your lucky day: in Paris, there is not one, but SIX exhibitions dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent. Or rather six museums in Paris have teamed up to curate a giant exhibition divided into six different topics about the same designer. Without further ado, discover the huge art event of the moment: the Yves Saint Laurent in museums exhibition. From January 29 to May 15, 2022, these institutions celebrate the 60th anniversary of the very first Yves Saint Laurent show, the perfect occasion for this XXL exhibition, then.

The musée des Arts modernes de Paris likes contrasts, games and differences, like Yves Saint Laurent used to! To pay tribute to the artist, in both substance and form, the museum presents his works and collections switching from monumental rooms to intimate sequences.

Yves Saint Laurent loved playing with variety: he juggled with rhythms and colors, lights and fabrics, styles and shapes. He was inspired by Matisse, Bonnard or pop culture, he enhanced female curves or unveiled a collection with sharp angles, he alternated between florals, abstract symbols, bold colors or pastels…

The designer did not lie idle: he was always pushing his limits, presenting bold, innovative and modern creations. To do so, he drew inspiration and used movements of his favorite painters: Alain Jacquet inspired him the idea of using a process to use serigraphy to create fashion more open to people. Florals made it to the dresses of the fashion designer after he discovered paintings by Pierre Bonnard

The museum of modern art also shines a light on these ambivalences, the richness of these collections also dialoguing with many more artists, sources of inspiration and creation.

From his very first shows, Yves Saint Laurent managed to influence French fashion. Always renewing himself, he spent his career playing with conventions, shapes, colors, to provide always surprising and innovative collections.

The “Yves Saint Laurent in Museums” exhibition is deployed in six major Paris museums, each one of them highlighting an aspect of the designer’s universe and character. Meet at the Centre Pompidou, the Musée national Picasso, the Museum of Modern Art, the Louvre and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum to discover the rest of the exhibition.
