Jean-Baptiste Poquelin from every angle... TheEspace Richaud in Versailles invites you to discover its latest exhibition on the famous playwright from January 15 to April 17, 2022. Entitled Molière, la fabrique d'une gloire nationale (Molière, the making of a national glory), this exhibition takes you right to the heart of the writer's life, a rather secretive one in fact, since in the end we know almost nothing about the person as much as the character.
So much so that his heirs have invented"a tradition that generations of artists have claimed and continue to claim". These grey areas in Molière' s life have inspired numerous affabulations, the best-known being"that of a Corneille whowas Molière's negro, or even that ofa Molière whowas Louis XIV's nom de plume". The exhibition aims to strip away this legend, highlighting"the abundant life of an artist with a singular destiny, who criss-crossed the kingdom of France before triumphing both in the city and at court", through his literary, theatrical, cultural and political writings.
The exhibition also looks at how the myth surrounding Molière was created, and"examines the changes in the cult of personality to which he was subjected, as he was reappropriated by the most diverse political regimes". It also looks at the discovery of a Molière seen from elsewhere,"having crossed the cultural and linguistic frontiers of our country to make his mark on five continents".
Ancient and modern editions, archives, manuscripts, staging notes, preparatory sketches, set photographs, photograms, as well as paintings, sculptures, drawings, watercolors, sets and costumes? These are just some of the materials on display here, highlighting the artist's life. A total of 200 works are on display. A wonderful opportunity to discover all the secrets of Molière's life... Shall we go?
