When the Louvre 's Italian collections meet those of Naples' Museo di Capodimonte... From June 7, 2023 to January 8, 2024, the Musée du Louvre will be hosting several masterpieces from the Italian institution as part of a partnership within the Louvre's own collections.
Please note: due to water damage, the Salle de la Chapelle, which houses part of the exhibition, is inaccessible. The works exhibited there are therefore not visible.
"In 2023, the finest masterpieces of the Capodimonte Museum will be brought into dialogue with those of the Louvre, in the very heart of the museum, as part of an unprecedented project", explains Laurence De Cars, the current director of the Louvre. She continues:"Royal palaces transformed into museums, rich in collections inherited from the greatest sovereigns, symbols of the historic ties between France and Italy, the Louvre and Capodimonte have a lot to share and say".
As for the artists on show, art lovers will find works by Titian, Caravaggio, Giuliano Romano, Michelangelo and Masaccio. In all, some sixty works are to be discovered amidst the Louvre's museum collections, in the Salon Carré and the Grande Galerie (Denon wing, 1st floor), the Salle de La Chapelle (Sully wing, 1st floor) and the Salle de l'Horloge (Sully wing, 2nd floor). In the Salle de l'Horloge, four masterpieces of drawing from the former Farnese collection will be on display: an autograph cartoon by Michelangelo, another by Raphael and two others by Raphael's collaborators, now in the Louvre.
Other events are also planned:"A rich musical and cinematographic program will enrich this invitation to definitively install Naples in Paris for almost six months", also explains Laurence De Cars. As explained in the Louvre's press release, a"rich season of concerts, shows, multidisciplinary and festive events" will be organized "throughout the exhibition, in the auditorium and in the museum's rooms". The press release goes on to explain that this unprecedented season"will celebrate the vibrant cultural past of the Parthenopean city, but also its powerful inspirational force for today's artists".
An exhibition that the editors were able to discover ahead of its opening... Works from the Museo Capodimonte are showcased at the very heart of the museum's permanent collections, side by side with the institution's greatest "stars", such as the Madonna of the Rocks, the various Saint-Sebastians (including Mantegna's) and, not far away, the Mona Lisa. Works that interact with one another, evoking the finest hours of art history.
Another great excuse to visit the Louvre... Shall we put it in our diaries, folks?
