Paris has been enjoying the super Wallace fountains for already 150 years. Very handy to get a quicky drink, they are now part of the city’s heritage, scattered throughout Paris. For this exceptional anniversary, the City of Paris proposes lots of entertainments and especially an exhibition in the Champs-Elysées garden, from September 24 to October 9, after a fountain was added to the Musée Carnavalet garden this past April.
On September 22 and 23, 2022, the Musée Carnavalet provides two days of symposium about the fountains and four themes: Wallace and philanthropy, the story of urban water supply, urban renovations related to hygiene-related preoccupations and the Wallace fountain between functionality and estheticism in the Orangery.
Open to all and for free, this open-air exhibition will tell you about the history and place of fountains in the collective heritage and the life of philanthropist Richard Wallace. You will learn how they are made, how they work and how they became a symbol to easy drinking water, from September 24 to October 9. And from October 11 to November 30, the exhibition will be displayed at the Pavillon de l’eau.
On September 24 and 25, plastic artworks by Paris pupils – inspired by the Wallace fountains – will be displayed. And enjoy a game on water and a tour in the city for the entire family!
Three hikes will be carried out by the French Hiking Federation, for free, and for the exhibit to discover the neighborhoods in Paris where these fountains are available. Pick your tour: North-East of Paris, South-East in the 14th and 15th arrondissement, or a “garden to garden” hike, between the Champs-Elysées exhibition and the Château de Bagatelle.
The latter will be available for tours on September 24 and 25, too, in the Bois de Boulogne. Vacation resort for Richard Wallace, the castle will open several rooms, the gardens and park for free, a first in many years.
