Over the centuries, the Château de Fontainebleau has inspired many artists: the monument reveals its portraits in an exhibition to be discovered from October 22, 2023 to March 25, 2024.

The Château de Fontainebleau is known as the home of kings, the imperial palace... But did you know that it is also home to over 3,500 works of graphic art? Part of this extensive collection is unveiled in a brand-new exhibition entitled Fontainebleau, Portraits of a Château.

From October 22, 2023, to March 25, 2024, come and admire over 250 drawings, engravings, prints, albums and photographs recounting the château's great hours.

Many artists have taken Fontainebleau as their model, immortalizing the castle in front of them, or drawing inspiration from the writings of the great writers of their time. These artists captured the château at a precise moment in time, allowing us to see how the site has evolved over the centuries and its occupants.

The exhibition also features a large number of official documents: plans for conversion or restoration, land registry papers demarcating the grounds, management of the palace, souvenirs... These special drawings tell thestory of the château and its transformations.

They include the major works that changed the face of the building, as well as the small details that add to its charm. Artists choose to highlight an architectural curiosity, a special décor, a room or garden layout... These little treasures, which may have disappeared by now, then resurface, as do the great events that marked the life of the château: royal christenings, princely feasts, balls, fireworks, hunting, theater...

Along the way, all these historic moments are brought back to life by the drawings and works on display. To complete this resurgence of elements from the past, two models are installed, allowing us to visualize the buildings that have disappeared or been transformed.

An exhibition that should appeal to all lovers ofhistory and heritage!
