O Bout, the charming restaurant in Barbizon

As the name suggests, O Bout is the name of the friendly restaurant at the end of Barbizon's main street. You wouldn't know it from the street, but the place, which also serves as a local produce store and wine bar, hides a large room at the back for home-cooked meals. We'll take you there...

As a reminder, you never know, Barbizon is this small village in the Seine-et-Marne region of Ile-de-France, located on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, southeast of Paris. This village is most famous for having been an important center of the artistic movement of realism in the mid-19ᵉ century. It attracted many painters who sought direct inspiration from nature, including Jean-François Millet, Théodore Rousseau, and Charles-François Daubigny.

Barbizon 's appeal lies not only in its rich cultural and artistic heritage, but also in its charming rural landscape and proximity to the Fontainebleau forest, offering numerous opportunities for hiking and outdoor activities. The village is home to several artists' studios, which have been converted into museums such as the Musée Millet and the Musée des peintres de Barbizon, providing an insight into the history of the Barbizon School. A new, free museum, which doubles as a hotel and café, has recently been opened.

Between the museums and galleries, Barbizon's Grande Rue also boasts a wide range of cafés and restaurants where you can relax, have lunch or a drink. This time, we're taking you to the end of the street, close to the forest and its lovely walks, to discover"O Bout", the town's charming restaurant, opened in April 2023.

We go to O Bout for its warm, unpretentious atmosphere, but ideal for lovers of good food in a convivial setting. This little gourmet spot offers a varied menu to suit every taste, without trying to impress with overly complex or pretentious dishes. At the time of our visit, this menu was on the program, but please note that it changes regularly with the seasons.

Starters: Simple and tasty, they feature quality products such as panko-breaded prawns, accompanied by mesclun for a touch of freshness, or classic Burgundy snails, for those who appreciate traditional flavors. Dishes such as homemade foie gras terrine or beet with goat's cream remain true to the spirit of the place: honest, generous dishes.

Dishes: The heart of the menu lies in a selection of main courses ranging from pastas, such as linguine with lobster, to more down-to-earth options such aslamb confit for several hours, accompanied by its homemade purée, on the menu at the time of our visit. The dishes, though simple, are prepared with care, offering comforting, familiar flavors.

Burgers fans out there? O Bout also offers a range of burgers, available in vegan versions, from the panko-breaded prawn burger to more classic options like the Charolais beef steak burger. These burgers are an ode to indulgence without excess, underlining the restaurant's desire to offer pleasant, accessible dishes.

Finally, let's finish with the desserts and ice creams of the house. The brioche perdue with salted butter caramel and the various artisanal ice creams offer a simple but delicious conclusion to the meal. The options are varied, but they all follow the same guideline of simplicity and quality. Having eaten well, we opt for the rice pudding on the menu that day.

On sunny days, the restaurant sets up tables on the terrace in front of the bar so you can enjoy the sunshine. We recommend the aperitif planks accompanied by glasses of wine or house cocktails. The kid-friendly restaurant also offers a children's menu at €10.

Restaurant O Bout is the perfect place for those looking for an honest, gourmet meal with no fuss, in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
