More than just an exhibition, the Musée Guimet takes us on an introspective journey. A dive into our bodies and minds, to listen to ourselves and our well-being. To help us do this, the museum invokes the great principles of Asian medicine, dating back thousands of years.
As you will have gathered, the Musée Guimet presents a new exhibition: Médecines d'Asie, l'art de l'équilibre. The exhibition takes us from China to India, via Tibet, to discover the beliefs and traditions of these three great countries. Theexhibition runs from May 17 to September 18, 2023.
Ancient objects, statues, tapestries, sculptures, paintings, clothes, accessories... Some of these pieces are being shown to the general public for the very first time! More than 300 works are brought together and exhibited in this tour divided into four themes. The historical and mythological aspects of these medicinal traditions are explored, followed by systems of diagnosis and treatment, medicine of thesoul, and finally the confrontation between East andWest.
We discover how the practices of meditation, acupuncture, astrology, shamanism, exorcism, massage and pharmacopoeia are used to heal body and mind. Between science and belief, the exhibition presents these ancient traditions, which may still be practiced today.
The Musée Guimet has chosen an innovative scenography to immerse us in these distant cultures. Visitors can admire an apothecary's dispensary, a cross between a cabinet of curiosities and a pharmacy. Visitors can try their hand at meditation in a room designed for rest and introspection, stroll under the eye of astral divinities, ready to step out of their frames, explore the dialogues between East and West in an ancient library... Everything is done to take us on a journey and immerse us in these different cultures and eras.
These works of art are a delicate and fascinating way of introducing us to the beliefs and practices of these distant and ancient civilizations. An extraordinarily gilded statue tells the story of the healing gods, a painting explains how to cure certain ailments, ancient garments bear witness to the special beliefs and protections enjoyed by children, while remarkably well-preserved scrolls reveal how Western and Eastern medicine met and blended...
Each object is the bearer of incredible stories, often unknown in France. The exhibition lifts the veil on these shady areas, while giving a historical context to more popular practices, such as meditation, yoga or the use of medicinal plants. Take your time to admire each work of art, and let us guide you through themeditation area to better immerse yourself in these cultures.
An unusual and fascinating exhibition , to be discovered as soon as possible!
