This is one of the most popular rooms for visitors to the Palace of Versailles: it must be said that it played an important role in the life of Louis XIV... The treasures of the King's bedroom are revealed through this new exhibition organized from March 14 to July 16, 2023.
The Palace of Versailles invites us to discover Masterpieces from the King's bedroom. The Echo of Caravaggio in Versailles, an exhibition that brings the numerous paintings usually hung on the walls of the Sun King's bedroom to human height. At eye level, these exceptional paintings finally reveal all their beauty, for our greatest pleasure.
This ceremonial room was a central point in the life of the court at Versailles. The decoration of this room was not left to chance, and Louis XIV personally chose to hang some paintings by the great masters of painting.
We see in particular the works of Valentin de Boulogne, a French artist who is part of the Caravaggio movement. Religious subjects, pious scenes, chiaroscuro and Italian inspiration: we find all the codes of Caravaggio. These paintings are symbols for Louis XIV, who highlights art, French know-how, but also the importance of religion and Christian piety, for this King who defends his role as an authority in the Church and as a monarch of divine right.
The exhibition at the Palace of Versailles allows us to (re)discover these paintings that adorned the walls of the King's bedroom. It is also a unique opportunity to admire the nine paintings that were originally hung in this room, before it was refurbished.
An exhibition that should fascinate both art and history lovers. Shall we go there?
