This is a historic time for the United Kingdom: on March 6, 2023, Charles III is officially crowned King. It is the ideal moment for the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation to bring out its archives. We discover a series of photographs around the coronation of George VI, in 1937. The past is revealed, to better illuminate the present.
From May 5 to September 3, 2023, the exhibition The Other Coronation highlights several dozen photographs taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson in May 1937, in London. The French photographer was sent by the newspaper Ce Soir to cover the event. As usual, Cartier-Bresson found beauty and grandeur where it was not expected.
During such an event, journalists and photographers usually focus on the royal family, the new monarch, the palace, the carriage passing through the crowd... Henri Cartier-Bresson, on the other hand, turns to these anonymous spectators and immortalizes their emotions and reactions. The artist is interested in this people who have gathered in the street to face the new chapter of its history.
Big smiles or blasé faces, souvenir sellers, techniques and tricks to better see the event... This diverse crowd lives on in front of Henri Cartier-Bresson's camera. The photographer is particularly struck by the inventiveness of the English during this day: he immortalizes several times these people who use mirrors, periscopes and other mirrors used to see better.
