When art, history and new technologies meet, the result is a unique and powerful experience that puts the spotlight on a courageous and committed woman.
Stéphane Foenkinos and Pierre-Alain Giraud tell us about the life and struggles of Claudette Colvin, an African-American activist of the 1950s. Adapted from the biographical essay written by Tania de Montaigne, this story brings to life Claudette Colvin, unjustly forgotten by History, despite her fight against segregation. To immerse us in this story, the artists created Noire, an augmented reality installation presented at the Centre Pompidou from April 21 to May 29, 2023.
" Take a deep breath, blow, now you are in Montgomery, Alabama in the 1950s," with these opening words, the artists conjure up the actions of the past, both the most courageous and the most horrific. In March 1955, the young Claudette Colvin refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. A gesture that would be repeated nine months later by Rosa Parks.
Augmented reality makes it possible to bring these scenes to life all around us, thanks to holograms that bring people and situations to life. Through a HoloLens 2 headset, and an audio headset, we can see and hear the story playing out around us, as if we were there.
Archives, videos, original images and trailers accompany the holographic creation of Stéphane Foenkinos and Pierre-Alain Giraud. Virtual and real worlds mix together, creating a fragile bridge between us and History. The sounds, the voice of the narrator, the music complete the immersion in this strong and touching story, in which we meet a woman committed to human rights, in a terrible period of history.
A poignant experience to live without waiting at the Centre Pompidou!
