In February 2023, an asteroid fell in Normandy. And many people collected these little meteorites to enable science to analyze them! Today, they can be seen at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris!

A few months ago, in February 2023, an asteroid disintegrated in the Earth's atmosphere and fell in the beautiful Normandy region, just outside the Paris region. This rare event was a great treasure hunt for meteorite fragments. While some kept or sold them, others donated them for analysis and display in the Galerie de Minéralogie at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris!

Since June 1, 2023, and for several years to come, visitors will be able to observe exceptional pieces of asteroid 2023-CXI. And the largest of these meteorites, weighing in at 175 grams, has quite a story to tell! Recovered by independent American meteorite researchers, they took it home and sold it to Bil Bungay, an English documentary filmmaker who preferred to entrust it to the French museum.

The other piece was found thanks to a participatory science program, Vigie-Ciel, and Loïs Leblanc-Rappe, an art student who came to Normandy to help with the search after the asteroid fell. You can become a meteorite collector yourself!
