Nearly a century of struggles and demands immortalized in these highly diverse works. The Centre Pompidou is devoting a groundbreaking exhibition to the artists who have contributed to the struggles waged by LGBTQIA+ communities. Entitled Over the Rainbow, the exhibition runs from June 28 to November 13, 2023.
Clandestine and transgressive cultures, emancipation, obtaining rights, militant actions and important victories: since the 1920s, great changes have shaken up the lives of LBGTQIA+ communities. These changes have been made possible by the work of numerous painters, photographers, designers, singers, actors and writers... Who have brought their identity, their hopes, their will and their commitment to a fairer, more egalitarian world into the open.
Over 500 works and documents are on show at the Centre Pompidou, more than 500 pieces that tell the thousands of little stories that make up the big story. Works that are intimate or committed, works that question, affirm, explain, claim... The exhibition features artists from the 20th and 21st centuries, from every artistic movement and every art form.
Over the Rainbow explores a wide panorama of genres and works, subcultures and movements. Cinema, erotic photography from the interwar period, theater of inversions, literature and poetry rub shoulders with leather culture, militant productions and the most recent queer zines.
Gender, sexuality, self-expression, the convergence of struggles and ethnic issues, social classes, questions of all kinds... This touching exhibition recounts the beauty, the victories, but also the suffering and violence that have affected the LGBTQIA+ communities.
A beautiful exhibition not to be missed at the Centre Pompidou.
