What does a man look like? How should he act, how should he feel, what is the masculine ideal? To answer these questions, photographer Carolyn Drake set off across the USA, camera in hand. In this deeply human quest, the artist questions preconceived ideas, symbols of virility, her own view of masculinity, and her own identity.
This moving and surprising journey is unveiled in a photo exhibition, presented at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, from September 19, 2023 to January 14, 2024. The exhibition, MEN UNTITLED, takes us on a journey to meet men of all sizes, ages, colors and materials... It should be noted that this exhibition is aimed at an informed public.
In her quest, Carolyn Drake is not only interested in the living, but also in the works that represent these ideal men. What characteristics are highlighted in these images of beauty? And above all, how close are these images to reality?
Through the lens of her camera, Carolyn Drake seeks to lay these men bare, literally and figuratively. To bring out their true nature, their true beauty, far from the imposed stereotypes, the photographer digs deep and shines a light on these dogmas deeply buried in our habits, our looks.
Beyond this quest for masculinity, what the artist is seeking above all is a humanity stolen from reality. A vulnerability, a frankness held back in these male bodies in hiding. Discover this photographer's deeply moving journey in the MEN UNTITLED exhibition, on view at the Fondation HCB.
