Lafayette Anticipations fills up with contemporary art! The museum welcomes Study For No, the first solo exhibition in France devoted to the talented English painter Issy Wood, from October 18, 2023 to January 7, 2024. This retrospective, featuring more than 60 major works, many of which have never been shown before, offers a deep immersion into the artist's inner world, rich in nuance and questioning.
The central theme of theexhibition, which takes its name from a painting Wood will produce in 2019, crystallizes around the ideas of refusal and resistance. Visitors are invited to explore Wood 's obsession with various notions such as intimacy, femininity, identity and even power relationships in the contemporary world. Through her paintings, which range from leather jackets evoking hypersexualization, to gleaming car interiors, singular pet portraits and a panoply of self-portraits, Wood casts an amused yet critical eye on our society.
A hyper-productive artist, Issy Wood transcends the limits of painting to express a visual diary. Alongside this artistic approach, she devotes herself daily to writing and musical composition. Her deeply introspective work evokes resistance to oppressive systems, highlighting the vulnerability of the individual. Study For No is more than just an exhibition; it's a reflection on the power of the word "no" and an invitation to recognize and value its strength in our daily lives.
