A place steeped in history and remembrance, the Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération is dedicated to the resistance and liberation of France during the Second World War. Housed in theHôtel National des Invalides, an emblematic historic site in Paris, the museum retraces the epic story of theOrder of the Liberation, founded by General de Gaulle in 1940, and highlights the heroic deeds and sacrifices of those who resisted Nazi occupation.
The second French national order after the Legion of Honor, the Ordre de la Libération comprises just one title, that of Compagnon de la Libération, and a single insignia, the Croix de la Libération. A total of 1,038 Liberation crosses have been awarded to individuals, a small number that makes the cross France's most prestigious award for the Second World War.
The permanent collection features rare objects, documents and uniforms donated by the Compagnons de la Libération themselves or by their families, as well as photographs recounting the exploits of members of the Resistance and Free French fighters. Visitors can also discover poignant accounts of the men and women who braved adversity to defend their country's freedom and honor. Admire, in particular, the outfits of Jean Moulin and Commandant Leclerc, the future Marshal!
This emotional site offers a glimpse into the dark history of the Second World War, while celebrating the courage and resilience of the French people in their quest for freedom. An invitation to never forget the lessons of the past and to preserve the memory of those who fought for a better world. Completely renovated in 2016, the 1,200 m² exhibition space features over 2,000 exhibits illustrating the Compagnons' journey. In addition to its permanent tour, the museum regularly offers temporary exhibitions, theatrical tours and a themed escape game.
The Musée de l'Ordre de la Libération is open daily from 10am to 6pm, but is closed on January1, May1 and December 25. To visit the museum with peace of mind, book your tickets in advance: full admission is 15 euros, reduced admission 12 euros, while under-26s are admitted free of charge. In addition, this is a common ticket giving access to the entire Invalides site, including the Musée de l'Armée, the Emperor's tomb and the Musée des Plans-Reliefs.
While the entrance to the military museum is best accessed from the south via Place Vauban, another, more wheelchair-accessible entrance is via the Esplanade des Invalides.
