The art of thesword and duel has made the Dumas family famous and successful. The Château de Monte-Cristo recounts these cloak-and-dagger tales, mixing literature and historical anecdotes, in an original exhibition on view from March 1 to June 2, 2024.
The exhibition En garde! De la plume à l'épée brings together numerous photographs, engravings and costumes, retracing the great moments in the history of the Dumas family, and showcasing its most exceptional members. The story begins with Alexandre's father, General Dumas, a French army general who distinguished himself during the French Revolution and the Vendée War. Known for his bravery and skill in battle, stories of his exploits surely inspired young Alexandre.
The works ofAlexandre Dumas (père - beware, the family chronological tree can be confusing) are full of stories of duels, swordsmanship and heroic battles. The Trois Mousquetaires, famous for their mastery of the sword, spring to mind, as do his numerous novels and soap operas, inspired by the adventure stories of previous centuries.
This passion for the duel doesn't stop there: a few generations later, Alexandre Lippman, great-grandson of Alexandre Dumas (father), is a three-time Olympic fencing champion.
From fictional tales to battlefields and sporting competitions, the Dumas family is marked by the sword. Discover these fascinating stories with a visit to the Château de Monte-Cristo.
