The police have a special relationship with sport, whether in the supervision of major sporting events, or in the training of their troops. This special relationship is recounted in the exhibition Police et sport: esprit de corps, culture du corps, presented at the Musée de la Préfecture de Police, from March 7 to September 22, 2024.
This free exhibition looks at sport in its entirety, as a social and cultural practice. A role that has evolved considerably over the last few centuries! Whether for good health, team play, competition or personal achievement, the image and practice of sport have changed considerably over the decades. And so have the sports: walking, running and horse-riding were the preferred activities, before the democratization of soccer, cycling and water sports...
Today, a wide range of sports are open to all, and are celebrated at well-attended global events. World Cup, Six Nations Tournament, World Athletics Championships, Olympic and Paralympic Games... These events also reflect the place of sport in society.
The exhibition at the Musée de la Préfecture de Police shows how sport was also used in social struggles: women 's fight for freedom and independence was also reflected in their demand to practice the sport of their choice, and to have their sporting achievements recognized in competitions. Handisport competitions continue to improve the living conditions and visibility of disabled people. Athletes' victories serve the collective cause.
Social advancement, shared passion and physical activity: sport is often seen in a positive light, and many consider it an essential part of a person's daily life. In the police, sport is part of the routine: physical training and teamwork are important for the officer, and for group cohesion.
But sport also has a darker side. Excesses and injuries, doping, violence and brutality in defeat, sports betting and addiction... The Préfecture de Police museum tells the story of the excesses it encounters in its day-to-day work.
An original exhibition on the theme of sport, to be discovered free of charge.
