What's this strange tree that has grown in just a few days on the banks of the Carrousel bridge, on the Quai Voltaire? This monumental steel sculpture is the work of artist Daniel Hourdé, who presents us with his outdoor creation, entitled"L'arbre aux mille voix" ("The tree of a thousand voices"). It can be seen free of charge in Paris from March 21 to May 21, 2024.
Opposite the Louvre Museum, on the Left Bank, stands a tree made of metal. For the artist, it symbolizes freedom of expression, life and the resistance of art and ideas in the face of intolerance.
With its deformed trunk, mysterious appearance and foliage made of books, this tree astonishes and captures the eye. Because yes, on closer inspection, these strange leaves are actually books. Le Petit Prince, À la recherche du temps perdu, Hamlet, Boule de Suif, Le Diable au Corps, Orgueil et Préjugés, La Vagabonde, Une vie violente... The great classics of literature rub shoulders with more recent novels, and authors from every country are represented in this universal tree of life.
These well-known books seem eternal... And yet, Daniel Hourdé 's sculpture is a reminder of just how fragile works, stories and culture can be. Like the leaves on trees that fall and die in autumn, these works of art can also quickly disappear.
And yet, Daniel Hourdé remains hopeful! A symbol of rebirth, life and resistance, the tree persists season after season. Its deformed trunk shows that it has continued to grow in spite of the weather, and its leaves may fly away, but only to travel on to new horizons, and grow again in the spring.
This spring 2024, as you stroll along the banks of the Seine, come and admire the tree of a thousand voices, shimmering under the Paris sky.
