AdAJH, theAssociation des Amis de Jean-Pierre Hammer & Maurice Mourlot, today presents a new exhibition featuring works by two loyal friends and remarkable artists, both draughtsmen, painters and engravers: Maurice Mourlot and Jean-Pierre Hammer.
See animals from the jungle, domestic animals and even more dreamlike animals in this exhibition at Galerie LN.
Maurice MOURLOT (1906-1983) was a painter, draughtsman and lithographer who left an original and varied body of work: landscapes, animals, still lifes, flowers and more. "Thanks to his keen sense of animal observation, Maurice Mourlot - familiar with farms and the Jardin des Plantes - excelled in illustrations for texts by Kessel or Colette." Michel Melot, Foreword to the Catalogue raisonné of prints by J.-P. Hammer.
Several museums own his work: the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, Provins, "La Piscine" in Roubaix, as well as the Cabinet des estampes de la BnF and the Albertina in Vienna.
From 1970 to 2023, Jean-Pierre HAMMER (b. 1927) exhibited his paintings in France, Austria, Germany and New York... His luminous universe offers enigmatic meaning and singular poetry. "Hammer loves nothing so much as freedom," writes philosopher Mikel Dufrenne. "Some of his canvases are reminiscent of real scores, both in the meticulousness of the writing and in the interplay of harmonics", Robert Mallet. "Movement is everywhere, swirling like the waves of the sea or the flight of a bird", adds Alain Touraine. Cf. collective art book: Jean-Pierre Hammer (P.U.N, 1992).
