If you've recently crossed the Place du Palais-Royal in Paris, then this detail surely hasn't escaped you. Construction work is encircling the front and back of the former Louvre des Antiquaires shopping center located on this famous square. This exceptional 19th-century heritage site, just a stone's throw from the Louvre, will soon be home to the new spaces of the Fondation Cartier. The design of this new space was entrusted to Jean Nouvel, already behind the famous glass and metal building in the 14th arrondissement. According to Vogue France, the new Fondation Cartier spaces are due to open their doors to the public at the end of 2025.
Although the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain has been located in the 14th arrondissement since May 1994, the famous cultural center was inaugurated on October 20, 1984 in Jouy-en-Josas, in the Yvelines region of France. So 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the Fondation Cartier!
To mark this anniversary, the Fondation Cartier has created an installation visible through the large windows of its new premises in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. To be admired on the facades overlooking Rue de Rivoli and Rue Saint-Honoré, these large photographic portraits feature artists with whom the Fondation Cartier has had the opportunity to work. Take Patti Smith, for example. The legendary New York artist visited the 14th arrondissement in 2014 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Fondation Cartier. She gave a series of performances, including one with John Cale, which we were lucky enough to attend.
Lou Reed 's face also appears on the façade of the future Fondation Cartier. The legendary singer and musician gave an exclusive concert with his band The Velvet Underground in 1990 on the site, then located in Jouy-en-Josas. The 7-metre-high bay windows also feature a portrait of filmmaker and photographer Agnès Varda, who attended a Nomade evening in 2013.
Other personalities featured in the installation? French architect Jean Nouvel, Brazilian photographer and activist Claudia Andujar, filmmaker and actor Takeshi Kitano, artist Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe, director Marie Losier and Australian sculptor Ron Mueck. In the end, some thirty artists will have their portraits displayed on the façade of the future Fondation Cartier, just a stone's throw from the Louvre.
" Reflecting the way in which the Fondation Cartier has developed its programming over the past 40 years, the artists represented in this installation come from all disciplines - from painting to cinema, including architecture, music, fashion, photography, philosophy and the performing arts - and from all generations and geographies," explains the Fondation Cartier on its website.
The cultural venue is also launching a series of six podcasts retracing its history. Entitled " Voir venir, Venir voir ", the series has been available on all listening platforms since September 17.
In anticipation of the opening of the Fondation Cartier on the Place du Palais-Royal, the Fondation Cartier in the 14th arrondissement invites you to discover the Olga de Amaral exhibition from October 12, 2024 to March 16, 2025.
