Goodbye boulevard Raspail, hello Palais-Royal: at the end of 2025, the Fondation Cartier will be moving to new premises in the 1st arrondissement.

At the age of 40, it's time to change habits and explore new horizons. The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain has decided to move from Boulevard Raspail to the center of the capital, on Place du Palais-Royal. The new doors of the Fondation are due to open at the end of 2025.

This artistic institution was born on October 20, 1984. The then President of Cartier International, Alain Dominique Perrin, decided to offer contemporary artists a unique venue to showcase French and international creativity. The Fondation Cartier first moved to the Domaine du Montcel in Jouy-en-Josas, before moving to Paris in 1994, taking over the 14th arrondissement.

At the end of 2025, the institution moved once again, taking up residence on the Place du Palais-Royal, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. This building, constructed in 1855, was once the Grand Hôtel du Louvre, then the Grands Magasins du Louvre. Since 1978, and until its closure in 2020, it was known as the Louvre des Antiquaires. Architect Jean Nouvel took over this abandoned site, and once again put his talents at the service of the Fondation Cartier, to create a venue suited to the institution's rich artistic program.

In this Haussmann-style building, visitors can look forward to new spaces: 8,500 m² are open to the public. The exhibition spaces should cover 6,500 m², including 1,200 m² spread over five mobile platforms, which will enable the scenography and design of the pieces to be changed during the exhibitions.

Surrounded by Place du Palais-Royal, Rue Saint-Honoré and Rue de Rivoli, opposite the Louvre Museum and close to the Bourse de Commerce and 59 Rivoli: the new Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain is taking up residence in a lively district already well known to art lovers.

We look forward to the opening of this new venue, which should offer an interesting program to mark this new page in the history of the Fondation Cartier.
