Stretching over a surface area of four hectares, Ile Fanac, located in the commune of Joinville-le-Pont, is an island of greenery. There are no cars here; the only means of access is by staircase and elevator, on the Joinville bridge. The only means of access is via a staircase and an elevator over the Joinville bridge, so there's no need to worry about backfiring, horns honking and other city noise.
The island's strong point: its peace and quiet, offering a pleasant place to stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The island also offers a wide range ofactivities, including a rowing and canoeing club.
Cultural activities are not to be outdone. A School of the Arts has taken up residence on the island. Anecdotally, it is housed in a former guinguette (dance hall) depicted by Émile Zola in his novel Au bonheur des Dames. The Quai de la Marne, opposite theisland, offers a fine vantage point from which to admire this building, whose ochre facades seem to play with the green of the branches.
From the same bank, enjoy spotting the elegant mansions that dot the landscape - some overgrown with ivy, others in wood or with turrets - and often linked to privatepontoons and boats (if you please).
A little further on, you're likely to come face-to-face with a very original barge: the Lapin vert. Half-hidden by the surrounding vegetation, the brightly coloredbarge is a cosmopolitan, open space. Couscous, shows, concerts, a community café and even an open-air or stand-up stage are all good reasons to drop in!
